A closer look
Why design a sensible train engine when you can just rip the motor out of a deadly torpedo boat? The Napier Deltic was a profoundly weird piece of engineering featuring an opposed-piston layout shaped like an inverted triangle. Originally built to make British Navy vessels go ridiculously fast, railway engineers decided to shove these screeching, overly complex behemoths into locomotives. They were so loud and vibrated so violently that they practically rattled the teeth out of anyone standing near the tracks.
