Why Mercury Became Gemini’s Planet

In astrology, a planet’s “rulership” is a symbolic relationship: the planet is treated as a guide to a sign’s character and themes. Mercury is linked with Gemini, and astrologers associate both with quick movement, exchange, and the handling of information.

The name itself carries part of the symbolism. Mercury was the Roman messenger god, associated with travel and trade. The planet was also notable to sky-watchers for moving quickly across the sky. Astrological tradition folded those associations into a broader picture of Mercury as the planet of messages, speech, learning, and commerce.

From Information to Gossip

Gemini’s reputation for quick wit and talkativeness follows that symbolic chain. If Mercury represents the movement of information, then conversation—and, less flatteringly, gossip—becomes an easy fit. The stereotype of a Gemini flitting from topic to topic turns the same idea into a joke about restless attention.

These are interpretations within astrology, not established effects of the planet on personality. The useful distinction is that Mercury’s “influence” here is a system of symbolic associations: messenger becomes communication, trade becomes exchange, and exchange becomes the chatter for which Gemini is known.
