When the ocean refused to cooperate, bored Californian surfers decided the concrete pavement was a suitable alternative to water. In the 1950s, they dismantled innocent roller skates and hammered the wheels onto wooden planks to practice surfing the streets. It was an incredibly dangerous display of improvised engineering that somehow birthed a global culture.
