Before the invention of the cadastre, property lines were mostly determined by pointing at a specific tree and hoping your neighbor agreed. European states eventually mapped out every single square inch of land in massive bureaucratic registries, entirely replacing violent local feuds with the much more soul-crushing violence of zoning laws and endless paperwork.
