A closer look
Irish folklore features mystical cursing stones, or clocha breaca, which were typically round rocks placed on rural altars that a person could turn while reciting a curse against their enemies; the tradition dictated that if the curse was unjustified, the dark magic would immediately rebound and violently strike down the person who was attempting to cast it, and this built-in spiritual failsafe meant you had to be extremely confident that your neighbor actually stole your sheep before you risked eternal damnation over livestock, making it basically the mystical equivalent of filing a frivolous lawsuit, except instead of paying court fees, the penalty for being wrong was invoking the wrath of ancient Celtic gods upon your own household just to settle a petty dispute
