Drying off used to involve scraping a flat, completely non-absorbent piece of linen aggressively against yourself. It wasn't until the Ottoman Empire perfected the peshtemal—a fabric woven with hundreds of tiny, raised loops—that humans finally experienced a gentle dry. These loops dramatically increased the surface area, officially ending the era of stepping out of a bath and shivering for an hour.
