The shoe turns checkout into a forced reminder
Hotel-room safes are easy to forget because the things inside them are often out of sight: a passport, wallet, jewelry, or a spare device. At checkout, travelers may make a final sweep of drawers and outlets yet never think to open the safe.
Putting one everyday shoe inside changes the problem. While packing, you’ll notice that the pair is incomplete. Since you need both shoes to leave dressed for the day, the missing one interrupts the checkout routine and prompts you to retrieve it—and whatever else you stored with it.
Why an ordinary shoe works
The trick relies on a strong practical cue, not a reminder you have to remember to check. A note can be overlooked; an absent shoe is hard to ignore when you’re getting ready to go. It also uses an object you’re unlikely to mistake for something you meant to leave behind.
Choose a shoe you’ll definitely wear that day, and put it in the safe when you store your valuables. Keep the safe’s instructions or access method handy, too: the reminder is useful only if you can open it. The goal is to make forgetting the safe inconvenient before you reach the lobby, rather than discovering the omission after the room is already gone.
