Ted Nelson invented the concept of hypertext in the sixties but hated the World Wide Web so much he spent half a century building a beautifully overcomplicated alternative. Project Xanadu was supposed to be a utopian network with unbreakable two-way links and built-in micropayments. Instead, it became the tech world's most notorious vaporware, taking over fifty years to finally release a working prototype.
