Spontaneous generation was the mystical equivalent of leaving takeout in the fridge until it evolves into a new species. Alchemists didn't understand microscopic eggs, so they assumed inanimate organic matter possessed an inherent magical life force that literally conjured maggots out of thin air. They thought they were witnessing divine alchemy, when in reality, they just had atrocious kitchen hygiene.
