A closer look

Person you lie to the most is almost never your boss, partner, or parents; it is yourself. Your brain is a professional spin doctor that can justify almost any decision in a way that lets you sleep at night. You do not say, I procrastinated for four hours because I was scared of failing. You say, I work better under pressure. You do not admit, I bought that expensive gadget for status. You say, It was a smart investment. This is rationalization: instead of changing your behavior, you rewrite the story afterward so it sounds reasonable. The trick is that the lie usually contains a grain of truth, which makes it very convincing. One brutal but effective habit is to ask, what would I say if I had to explain this choice to a brutally honest friend who cares about me but is not impressed by my excuses? That question cuts through a surprising amount of self-made fog.
