The scientist who fired molten quartz from a crossbow
C.V. Boys needed an impossibly thin, perfectly elastic fiber to measure the gravitational constant. Silk snapped, and metal warped. So, behaving like a true mad scientist, he attached a piece of molten quartz to an arrow and fired it from a crossbow down the hallway of his lab. The resulting microscopic quartz thread was stronger than steel and sensitive enough to measure the gravitational pull of a passing truck.
