Being conventionally attractive was apparently a massive spiritual handicap in the seventeenth century. To deter eager suitors and keep her focus entirely on her extreme religious vows, Rose actively destroyed her own complexion by rubbing harsh spices and lye into her skin. It was essentially the most aggressive, self-inflicted anti-beauty routine ever conceived by a holy person.
