Standard public transit sucks because it has to wait at the exact same red lights as the guy texting in his civilian sedan. Bogota fixed this by giving their TransMilenio buses god-like control over city infrastructure. As an articulated bus approaches an intersection, an onboard GPS system talks directly to the traffic grid, aggressively extending the green light or instantly turning opposing lights red. It forcefully clears the path, proving that if you want people to ride the bus, you have to let the bus cheat.
