A closer look
Scriptwriting is apparently for amateurs. The defining masterpiece of the mockumentary genre had practically no written dialogue; Christopher Guest and his co-stars were simply given a loose outline and told to start rambling about Stonehenge and amplifiers that go to eleven. Their commitment to the bit was so aggressively authentic that their fictional heavy metal band eventually went on an actual physical tour and charted on the Billboard Top 100, blurring the line between comedy and actual rock stardom.
