Translation of Light: How a Planet “Carries” a Connection
In traditional astrology, this technique is called translation of light. It offers a way to read a connection when two planets representing the people or matters in a question are not making a direct astrological aspect—a recognized geometric relationship between planets.
The astrologer looks for a third, faster-moving planet. It has recently made an aspect to one of the two planets and is moving toward an aspect with the other. In the chart’s symbolic logic, the intermediary carries the first planet’s “light” onward, linking the two subjects through an event, person, or circumstance represented by that intermediary.
Why the Sequence Matters
The interpretation depends on the order: the faster planet must first separate from one planet and then apply to the other. “Applying” means moving toward an exact aspect; “separating” means moving away from one. The sequence supplies the story of contact: one side has already been engaged, and the intermediary is next to connect with the other.
This is not a claim that a planet physically transmits information or causes an event. It is a symbolic rule used especially in horary astrology, a tradition that interprets a chart cast for a particular question. Within that framework, translation of light can suggest that a stalled connection may come about indirectly—through a go-between or a developing circumstance—rather than through a direct link between the two main parties.
