Ilha da Queimada Grande is an island off the coast of Brazil completely overrun by thousands of golden lancehead vipers, making it so dangerous that the Brazilian navy strictly forbids public access. Evolution decided to maroon a bunch of venomous serpents on this tiny rock, where they adapted by developing venom potent enough to literally melt the flesh off migrating birds mid-flight. Estimates suggest there is about one deadly snake for every square meter of land, turning the entire place into a writhing, slithering nightmare that makes Australia look like a petting zoo. The only people allowed to visit are scientists with a death wish and navy personnel tasked with maintaining a lighthouse that practically runs on the pure, concentrated fear of its operators. It is nature’s way of hanging a giant neon sign that says humans absolutely do not belong everywhere
