Olfactory fatigue, commonly known as nose blindness, is your brain's way of filtering out constant smells so you do not go completely insane from sensory overload; after a few minutes of exposure to a strong scent, your odor receptors simply stop sending signals to the brain, allowing you to focus on new, potentially dangerous environmental changes instead, which is an excellent survival mechanism for detecting predators, but also means you are completely incapable of smelling how bad your own apartment actually is; you could be living in a miasma of unwashed laundry, old pet dander, and questionable cooking odors, and your brain will just tell you it smells like nothing, making it a biological conspiracy of silence, forcing your guests to silently judge you while your nose confidently lies to you about your hygiene
