A pizza became a character
While developing Pac-Man, Namco designer Toru Iwatani found his starting point in an ordinary meal: a pizza with one slice removed. The remaining shape suggested a round character with a wedge-shaped mouth. That simple outline gave players an immediate way to read the game: Pac-Man was a creature that could eat.
The shape made the rules visible
In an arcade game, a character has to make sense at a glance, often on a small screen and in the middle of fast movement. Pac-Man’s open mouth did that work without words. As he moved through the maze, the animation made each bite visible, tying the character’s appearance directly to the game’s central action.
The design also gave the maze a clear cast: a vulnerable, expressive hero pursued by ghosts. A slice missing from a pizza may seem like a modest spark for an icon, but it produced a silhouette that players could recognize—and understand—almost instantly.
