Before it was fiercely protected by the government, the ancient monolithic wonder was just private real estate. In 1915, a local lawyer named Cecil Chubb went to an auction to buy some dining chairs and impulsively purchased the entire monument instead. He gifted it to his wife, who apparently hated it so much he ended up donating it to the nation.
