Aleister Crowley dubbed himself the Great Beast 666 and became the most notorious occultist of the twentieth century, but his mystical career was mostly defined by him being an absolutely unbearable houseguest. He created a highly complex magical system called Thelema, which was largely an excuse to do copious amounts of drugs, perform elaborate sex magic, and force his followers to pay his mounting hotel bills across Europe. His infamous Abbey of Thelema in Sicily was supposed to be a utopia of spiritual liberation, but local authorities quickly realized it was just a filthy, decaying villa filled with feral dogs, sick acolytes, and a self-proclaimed messiah who refused to clean up after himself. For all his boasting about summoning demons and controlling the astral plane, his ultimate legacy is that he was successfully deported by Mussolini simply for being too annoying and gross
