Why seatbelts are designed to stretch in a crash
Your safety harness is not designed to rigidly hold you completely solid against an impact. The fabric contains carefully engineered stitching that intentionally tears and stretches under extreme force, acting as a decelerator so your ribs don't shatter against a totally unyielding strap. Once they stretch, they are completely ruined and must be entirely replaced.
