A closer look
Automakers didn't just make those headrests removable so you could awkwardly fold your back seats down. The metal prongs anchoring the headrest are intentionally designed to act as emergency glass-breaking tools. If you accidentally drive your SUV into a lake and the electronic windows short out, you can yank the headrest off, wedge the metal peg into the corner of the window seal, and pry it backward to shatter the tempered glass and escape. It’s a hidden survival tool masquerading as ergonomic neck support.
