How EA cracked the Sega Genesis
Before they were known for charging $60 for roster updates, EA was pulling off elite corporate espionage. In 1990, Sega's licensing fees were draining profits. EA founder Trip Hawkins hired engineers to illegally crack the Genesis console hardware, build their own independent game cartridges, and then essentially blackmail Sega into giving them a cheaper, exclusive licensing contract.
