Why casinos destroy decks after a few hours

Paranoia is an incredibly expensive overhead cost. To prevent enterprising card counters and cheats from subtly marking aces with a fingernail, high-end establishments systematically cycle out decks every few hours, aggressively shredding or hole-punching perfectly good playing cards to protect their precious margins.
