A closer look
Bloodhound SSC is a British supersonic land vehicle designed to reach 1,000 miles per hour, but it currently just sits there as a monument to funding issues. Initially conceived to inspire future generations of engineers, this rocket-powered car ended up proving that physics is easy but securing endless sponsor money is the real hurdle. Powered by both a jet engine from a Eurofighter Typhoon and a rocket, it essentially strapped a driver to a bomb and pointed them across a South African desert. Naturally, the project ran out of cash before hitting the magical quadruple-digit speed, leaving us with a very pointy, very expensive paperweight. At least it looks incredibly fast while completely stationary!
