Artificial intelligence language models achieve their seemingly miraculous conversational abilities by scraping billions of words from public websites, heavily relying on massive databases of Wikipedia articles and random Reddit forums. People treat these chatbots like omniscient digital oracles, completely forgetting that their underlying knowledge base is patched together from the aggressive, unfiltered arguments of anonymous internet trolls and amateur historians. We spent decades worrying that highly advanced machine superintelligence would calculate a hyper-logical reason to destroy humanity, but the real danger is that it learned how to communicate by studying the most toxic comment sections known to man.
