Boris Karloff didn't need to act like a shambling, miserable corpse; the wardrobe department forced him into it. To make the monster look appropriately towering and clunky, Karloff was fitted with boots weighing thirteen pounds each, modified from the gear used by actual asphalt pavers. Every step he took on set was a genuine act of lower-body torment.
