Dynasty solved that problem by making Fallon Carrington’s disappearance part of the plot. After Pamela Sue Martin left the role, the show had Fallon abducted by aliens; when she returned, Emma Samms played her.
Turning a Production Change into a Plot Twist
The device did more than offer an explanation for why Fallon had vanished. An abduction gave the writers a dramatic interruption that fit the series’ taste for extravagant surprises, while leaving the character available to rejoin the Carrington family. Rather than asking viewers to accept a new face with no story attached, the show made Fallon’s absence—and return—an event within the fictional world.
That is a particularly flexible solution for a soap opera. Because its stories unfold over time, a character can disappear during one stretch and come back later, allowing the show to preserve old relationships and conflicts even as the performer changes.
