Paul-Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran spent endless hours boiling down zinc ores just to find a tiny trace of a shiny new substance. He isolated gallium, a metal that literally melts if you hold it tightly in your palm. The ultimate punchline was that Mendeleev had already predicted its exact physical parameters years earlier without ever touching it.
