Metal contacts are too slow for the modern enthusiast, so we started relying on lasers just to type a letter. Optical switches feature a tiny beam of infrared light blasting inside the plastic housing. Pressing the key simply pushes a plastic stem down to violently interrupt the beam, signaling a click. It is an incredibly dramatic, futuristic way to accomplish the profoundly mundane task of mashing the spacebar.
