Why TV test bars came with a 1,000-hertz tone

The colorful, screeching test bars that appear when a television channel goes totally offline are actually highly complex calibrators. The intense neon SMPTE color bars allow broadcast technicians to accurately measure analog video levels and adjust screen contrast globally. The obnoxious high-pitched tone playing alongside the bars is purposefully locked at exactly 1,000 Hertz to test pure audio distortion limits.
