Cathedral relics turned out to be antelope horns
HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART
Authenticating holy relics was apparently not a terribly rigorous scientific process. Great cathedrals prominently displayed massive, curved talons strictly claimed to belong to the legendary half-eagle, half-lion hybrid beasts. Modern examination ruthlessly revealed that these sacred objects were literally just the heavily polished horns of antelope.
