In 1895, Sven Hedin led his caravan into the blistering Taklamakan Desert and casually forgot to verify their water supply. When the wells ran dry, half his crew and animals died in agony. Hedin only survived by crawling to a muddy pool after sustaining himself on sheep's blood and a desperate swig of camel urine.
