Why a pope grew a beard after Rome was sacked

Following the devastating Sack of Rome in 1527, the Pope was so incredibly depressed that he refused to shave. Even though Catholic canon technically forbade clergy from having facial hair, he let it grow into a massive, wizard-like beard. The look became so unexpectedly popular that subsequent popes kept the facial hair trend going for a century.
