A closer look
When you're a Renaissance master, petty revenge is just another day at the office. The Pope's master of ceremonies, Biagio da Cesena, openly complained that the Sistine Chapel ceiling had too much nudity. In response, Michelangelo painted him into the mural as Minos, judge of the underworld, complete with donkey ears to signify foolishness and a large snake conveniently biting his groin. When Biagio complained to the Pope, the Pontiff famously replied that his jurisdiction did not extend to Hell.
