Putting optical media inside a portable device meant to be shoved into pockets was a stroke of absolute madness. Sony created the Universal Media Disc, a tiny proprietary format housed in a flimsy plastic shell that loved to snap open, expose the disc to pocket lint, and spin up with the terrifying acoustic noise of a tiny jet engine.
