Boxing gloves were introduced to protect hands
Contrary to popular belief, slipping heavily padded mittens onto fighters wasn't actually meant to protect faces from getting smashed. Human knuckles are surprisingly fragile, and early bare-knuckle brawlers kept shattering their hands on their opponents' thick skulls. The padding was strictly implemented to ensure the fighters could punch significantly harder without breaking their own fingers in the process.
