Breaking the fourth wall implies there were three others to begin with. In traditional proscenium theaters, set designers built literal three-sided rooms on stage. The 'fourth wall' was just the gaping, invisible void where the audience sat, quietly pretending they weren't aggressively eavesdropping on a domestic dispute.
