Elizabethan theaters used real pig blood onstage

Long before the invention of sterile corn syrup fake blood, theaters went for horrific authenticity. When characters were brutally stabbed in plays like Titus Andronicus, actors would conceal inflated pig bladders filled with actual animal blood from local slaughterhouses under their costumes. When struck, the bladder would burst, soaking the stage.
