Stage ghosts in classic theater arrived via hidden trapdoors

Before the invention of fancy strobe lights and fog machines, you had to get creative to spook a crowd. Classic Elizabethan stages featured a massive trapdoor cut directly into the center of the wooden floor. They affectionately called the area beneath the stage 'Hell', and actors playing ghosts or demons would dramatically pop out of the floorboards.
