Why theatrical green rooms aren't usually green

The legendary backstage area where performers wait to go on isn't a stylistic choice of emerald hues. The origin of the term is heavily debated, but most agree it originally referred to the 'green' (young or unprepared) actors who waited there, or from the use of green baize cloth to protect costumes. Today, they're usually just depressing beige.
