Waiting until a patient starts gasping for air is a terrible way to treat a failing heart. Doctors now shoot a tiny, battery-free sensor called CardioMEMS directly into the pulmonary artery to measure pressure changes in real-time. By lying on a special pillow that powers the chip, patients transmit their heart metrics via Wi-Fi, allowing cardiologists to adjust diuretics weeks before fluid actually fills the lungs.
