Building a fictional universe usually involves giant maps and dense appendices, but modern audio drama proved you can accomplish the same thing with a fake weather report. By delivering news about blood-thirsty hooded figures in the dog park with the exact same soothing, NPR-style vocal cadence used to announce a bake sale, the podcast normalized the apocalyptic. It’s an incredibly insidious way to build a universe: you lull the audience into a false sense of security with mundane formatting, making the sudden drops into existential terror hit infinitely harder.
