Sega's iconic mascot was almost a completely different, infinitely less cool animal. Before they settled on a hyperactive blue rodent, developers wanted a rabbit that picked up garbage with its ears and hurled it at enemies. Realizing this mechanic was too incredibly slow for a game about speed, they pivoted, sparing us from a timeline where 'Sonic the Trash Rabbit' was a thing.
