We all confidently called them 'Digital Video Discs', but the creators couldn't make up their minds. As the format evolved to hold software and data, the industry pushed to change the acronym to 'Digital Versatile Disc'. They fought so much internally that the official governing forum literally declared DVD stands for absolutely three meaningless letters.
