Drawing a terrible opening hand used to mean guaranteed defeat until Magic: The Gathering implemented the London Mulligan. By allowing players to draw a fresh seven cards and tuck the excess onto the bottom of their deck, the math radically shifted. It eliminated unplayable hands but inadvertently supercharged combo decks, giving them terrifying consistency to assemble their winning pieces on turn one.
