A closer look
The difference between a game trailer you skip and a trailer you obsess over is all in the metronome. Indie studios like Supergiant utilized a high-tension video editing technique for the Hades release by avoiding cutting strictly on the heavy downbeat of the music. Instead, they mapped the game's lightning-fast dash and sword-slash animations directly to the syncopated off-beats of the soundtrack. This prevents the editing from feeling like a predictable corporate slideshow, injecting a relentless, nervous, and unresolved kinetic energy into the trailer that practically forces the viewer's adrenaline up.
