Mozilla was named as a “Mosaic Killer”
In the cutthroat world of 1990s browser wars, subtlety was dead. Mosaic was the dominant web browser, and Netscape's engineering team internally named their project 'Mozilla' because they intended it to be the 'Mosaic Killer.' They even had a cartoon lizard mascot. They did eventually crush Mosaic, only to be subsequently squashed by Internet Explorer in a karmic display of corporate violence.
