During the Apollo space missions, writing code was largely seen as "women's work" and was treated like typing or clerical labor by the male hardware engineers. Hamilton, the director of the Software Engineering Division at MIT, literally invented the term to artificially elevate the perceived legitimacy of her entirely crucial discipline. It worked, and now software engineers get paid ungodly sums to break production on Fridays.
