Next time you angrily struggle to unwrap a tightly sealed snack, blame a Swiss chemist trying to protect his dining room table from spilled wine. He tried applying a clear liquid viscose to fabric to make it utterly stain-proof, but the coating just turned entirely stiff and aggressively peeled off in brittle sheets.
